What can you expect in a coaching session?

6–8 minutes

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate you for choosing the path of personal growth by visiting this site! Whether you are here to find out more about coaching, or whether you are here to find a coach, making the decision to work on yourself sets you on a trajectory of becoming a much better person!

Now, say you have decided to sign up for a coaching session. What are some of the things you can expect? Personally, I cannot speak for other coaches, but this is what I can say about myself.

This is what you can expect from me:

  1. Discovery Call: I will first meet you for what’s called a “discovery call”. This “discovery call” is generally free or at a very discounted price. This call is for us to figure out whether our vibe is suitable for each other. After all, if we are going to work on some pretty serious issues in your personal, professional, or even spiritual life, it is extremely important that we are able to communicate well! I don’t want you to spend time and resources on me if our chemistry aren’t there from the get-go. During the discovery call, I will also share with you briefly about what coaching is about. And just to make sure that we are on the same page, I will also lay down the differences between coaching, counselling, and mentoring. This is so that you know what you are getting yourself into! Next, I will invite you to share with me what your objectives of seeking coaching is — whether is it to work on your career, relationships, spiritual walk, or simply life together. Knowing your objectives will help me craft an individualised coaching plan for you so as to achieve all your intended objective. When we have cleared all of these, I will invite you to share if you have anything to work on. We can treat this as a trial coaching session for you to figure out if my style of coaching works for you! If you are happy, I will then send you a contract at the end of the session. This contract will indicate the sessions we have agreed upon (I personally prefer to start with 5 sessions. See point 3 below), the price per session (and the total cost), termination clauses, no-show clauses, and other nitty grities. Once you have signed the contract and make the payment, then we will proceed to our actual coaching!
  2. Personalised Coaching Plan: Before your first session, I will piece together your objectives and craft a personalised coaching plan for you. I personally do not believe in a one-size-fit-all model because God has created all of us differently! So, having a personalised coaching plan meant that we can work together to come up with something that will provide you the holistic service you require to reach your intended goal. I will be sharing this plan with you during our first official session together. I will invite you to share your thoughts and concerns if any. Changes can also be made if required. Once this is done, I will then invite you to begin our first proper session!
  3. Actual Coaching: The structure of the actual coaching session will be heavily dependent on what we have agreed upon in the personalised coaching plan. However, as a rough template, what I will generally propose is a 5-session programme as shown below.
    • Session 0 = Discovery Call
    • Session 1 = Confirmation of personalised coaching plan; begin actual coaching.
      • Identifying the issue and objectives.
      • Envisioning what your ideal situation will be.
      • Identifying obstacles you are currently facing.
      • Identifying actions you can take for these obstacles.
    • Session 2 / 3 / 4 = Follow up on actions; exploring other possible hinderance from multiple different angles.
      • Identify focus for the day.
      • Share what has been done since the first session; whether it has helped.
      • Explore what else can be done.
      • Explore the issue using various tools.
      • Identify any further action(s) required.
    • Session 5 = Wrap up; further planning.
      • Review what has been discussed and done over the past 4 sessions.
      • Evaluate whether these are helpful in resolving the original objective and other subsequent issues that surfaced.
      • Identify issues that are not-yet-resolved.
      • Invitation to consider for future sessions if helpful.

The 5 sessions are designed in such a way so that it allows you to approach the topic from multiple different angles. And if that is not necessary for you, it also allows you to dive into different topics if required. Ultimately, it really depends on your desired outcome and objectives. I will respect your decision to change the direction of the discussion whenever you require. After all, in this thing called life, things may propped up out of the blue and it will always help to have someone you trust to talk things through!

But all these said. Coaching is not a one-sided thing. It takes two hands to clap. Therefore, there will also be things I will need from you!

What I expect from you:

  1. Come with an open mind. What’s most important is that you come with an open mind to be coached. If you do not want to work on yourself, then there is no point in wasting our time. Coaching is a partnership between the client and the coach to bring the client from one state in life to a better state in life, depending on your intended outcomes. If you are not open to the idea of coaching, it is a little hard to open your heart to it. And that brings me to my second point.
  2. Come with an open heart. Coaching requires the client to be open and vulnerable. At the beginning of every session, I will assure you that everything said will be kept strictly confidential. I will be taking some notes to develop our coaching plan and to ensure that we keep things in check. But you can rest assured that these notes are kept on a secure server and will only be for my eyes only. There will not be any judgement nor condemnation in the room. No matter your background or circumstances, I will honour you and respect you for who you are. Now, only when you are open and vulnerable can we uncover issues that are real. I have had clients who are unwilling to open and give me only short responses. It is obvious to say that the coaching session didn’t go far. So, if you want to benefit from our session, I will need you to be open and truthful with me. This will allow us to dive into the heart of the issue and work on the things that are deeply meaningful.
